A downloadable game

Version 2.0 (10.6.25):

A new version of the generator is now available

  • Added Cave systems with the options of dungeons leading into caves and vice versa
  • Added a bunch of new tables like gas, veins, fauna, cave features, door types and many more
  • Added dungeon types that change the dungeons to fit a theme
  • Added a system for mining
  • Added Minibosses
  • Added short rules for factions
  • Reorganized the whole structure to make it easier to cross-reference
  • Expanded the introduction and added a short tutorial
  • And a bunch of more stuff. Enjoy.

What is this?

•This generator creates system-neutral classic-style dungeons and caves for any fantasy TTRPG.

How to use this? A step by step guide

•Start by choosing to either create a cave or dungeon (both may lead to the other later). Go to the corresponding page and tables: p.2 & tables for dungeons, p.5 & tables for caves.

•Start by rolling to determine the entrance type (A1 D1). Roll the type of dungeon/cave if you want a more specific theme for the whole structure (A2 D2). •Afterwards roll the first room of the first level (A3 D3) and roll for the stocking of the first room (B2 E2). Additionally roll for dungeons the door type (B5) and for caves stone type (E5) of the first room.

•Each square is 10x10 feet. Each opening, marked by arrows, leads to a new room which has to be approached and explored to reveal its form and contents.

•To create a new room at an opening, roll sequentially 4D6:

•The first D6 determines if the room is a corridor or chamber and door for dungeons (B1 C1), or if it’s a tunnel or cave and the type of offset between both rooms for caves (E1 F1).

•The second and third D6 determine the shape of the according room type (B1,C1,E1 & F1). Rotate the rooms to fit the map layout and ensure proper connections to adjacent rooms. Create as many loops as possible (Jaquaysing a dungeon). If a new room shape overlaps an existing room, adjust the new room‘s shape to fit the space and connect room openings if existent.

•The fourth D6 determines the stocking / content of room (B2,C2,E2 & F2).

•Additional rolls of various dice may be needed afterwards to further determine specific room features, monsters, treasures and other elements. These may also require extra rolls to create even more specific and unique elements.

•Tables are stated to help with cross-referencing.

How to support the project?

•Share your feedback, ideas, creations and spread the word.

Thank you for your ongoing support ofthehill! :)

Great new update and awesome content.
I love the new caves !

The pleasure is mine, mightiest of all seals!

(+1)

This is great! Do you use a PS brush to create the cross-hatching around the rooms? If you got that from somewhere, could you share?

I think it was this one: https://www.mapsbyowen.com/shop/crossbrush

Very cool stuff. Well done! Thank you, my guy.

(1 edit)

Really love to see your Dungeon! Thanks alot for Sharing reelneim!!!

Just trying to dive into this, could you explain how you determined the doors? Cheers!

Atm writing on a Version with a bigger Tutorial.

When approaching a new room you Always Roll 4D6.

The First die decides what is on the other door: 1-3 corridor, 4-6 Chamber.

In Addition to that, the exact number determines the Type of door.

1: Locked door into corridor

2: door into corridor

3: No/Missing door Leading into corridor

4: No/Missing door Leading into Chamber

5: door into Chamber

6: locked door into chamber

Thanks for the clarification, make sense now :)

Sure Thing! I'll Upload an update on saturday with an improved explanation, cave Generation, additional content and fixes

It's a testament to how good this works that I can roll a 30+ room dungeon (including corridors) with random rolls and the dungeon comes out needing very little modifications or additional details. Good job.

Would you be interested in doing a cave version as well?

Nice, really happy to hear that!

Already started working on a cave version as well with different types of veins to mine, gasses to better not inhale or ignite, dangerous tunnels and fungal overgrown caves. It will probably still need a couple of weeks of work (due to private & work stuff) but it's going to come

(1 edit) (+1)

I did find a few more misspellings aand confusing table prompts. Would we send those to you here?

Yes, that would help a Lot! Thank you so much :)

(+1)
  • In column E2: It says "Coffins Filled with D6, 2d8" but it's a D4 to determine if the coffin is empty or has a corpse.  What is the D6 for?
  • In column C4 is "Alchemie" in "Alchemie Laboratory" correct or should it be "Alchemy"?

I think the rest of the stuff I found has already been updated.

I'll update them immediately !

I am not a native speaker, so slip ups like that happen more frequent in my texts than they should! Thank you so much for the heads-up, ofthehillpeople!

Just wanted to comment that is is such a cool resource. Visually looks great, and perfect for generating interesting dungeons. Very old school, perfect for a dungeon crawl-head like me!

Haha, thank you very much, Bergasa! Really happy you are having fun with it! :)

At the moment I am also working on a Roll 4 Cave/underdark Version, where the focus is more on natural formations that are hard to traverse, hazards like gas and veins you can harvest.

(+1)

That sounds amazing!! Thank you for your efforts, I can't wait for that one.

Really appreciate your words Bergasa! Comments Like yours motivate a lot to do these kind of projects

(+2)

This is awesome!! Love the work you do.

(+1)

Thank you for the Kind words ~ your work looks amazing as well!

(+1)

This is such an amazing resource. Thank you so much for putting your ideas to paper and putting them out for everyone.

Thank you so much for the kind words theletterfox! Really happy you get some use out of it!

Already started collecting ideas For a Roll 4 Caves Version where the Goal would be to have pretty realistic structures and the challenges are the spaces itself with mostly veins to mine as loot

(+1)

This is a great resource. Thank you for sharing it! I'm planning to use this as a supplement in my Let Us Build A Tower depthcrawl oneshot on Sunday to determine room and corridor shape for my randomly-rolled chambers. Can't wait!

Uhh Hope you'll get some fun out of it olivewood!

Very cool generator, I gave it a test generation and it worked very well. I just noticed a few things:

-On table B3 some entries refer to F tables when they are probably supposed to refer to E tables.

-On table B2 and some others, there are fractions but it's not explained in the rules what they mean. Does Monster (2/6 +Feature) mean you roll up the monsters and then reduce them to 1/3 of the number and add a Feature? Or does the 2/6 affect the feature somehow?

-Lastly the treasure seems a bit too random. I got results between 2 and 1,700 GP on the first level. I think it should be a bit more flat and dependent on the level, maybe with gems and art included.

But overall it was a fun experience and the results are great inspiration, I especially enjoyed the Frescoes and Shrines. Keep up the great work!

(+1)

Thank you for the Feedback! Already fixed the mistakes and updated the File (Feeling a Bit stupid For these mistakes).

Added an explanation For that: It means a x/6 Chance that the element exist. So in the example in a room with a Monster there is also a Chance a Feature exists in the room (If you Roll a 1&2 on a d6). I also Changed the treasure Roll ~ already struggled a bit with it when i Made the Generator. The gold can also represent items found with according price. I tried to cram different types into the Table f.e. d6 gems worth 50 gp ~ but i felt Like the loot felt to samey with that system

(+1)

This looks like one of the better dungeon generators I've seen.  Thank you for your hard work!

Thank you for the encouragement, crinkle ! :)

(+2)

Great work! A couple things I found:

Seems like entry 4 (Frescoes) on table E3 should go to E8 (the Frescoes table), not E3 (the Statues table)

Also the E3 table heading is misspelled as "Staues" not "Statues"

(1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for the heads up!

Fixed it! :)

(+1)

Amazing! Great generator.

(+1)

Thank you oh mighty frog knight!

(+2)

This is a great tool, I can see it being my goto from now on! I wondered whether you'd be able to post the geomorphs as separate images? I'd like to be able to use them in a VTT.

(+1)

I can do that. Which File Type would Work For that best?

(+2)

PNG works for me, but I believe a lot of VTTs support webm as well. Thank you!

(+2)

I also would up this request.
It's will be very nice to have this dungeon pieces in .png/.jpg format.

(+1)

So each room as a seperate png right?

I can do that on the upcoming Weekend :)

(+1)

Yes.
As 'piece' I mean every numbered dungeon 'tetromino'/'room'/etc.
Thank you ahead! =)

(+1)

excellent dungeon generator for solo gaming

(+1)

That's sick !

(+1)

Catch the Dungeon fever ;)

(+1)

Nice generator!
But how it's licensed? Can I make online tool (free) based on these images and logic?

(+1)

Open Gaming license! If you Credit the Project/me feel free to make an online Tool! If you Need Something Just Hit me Up! ;)

(+1)

Nice, thank you!

(+2)

To properly license this under the ogl you need to include this license text https://opengamingfoundation.org/ogl.html

You could release this under CC BY-SA 4.0
this would do most of the same things, but make it much easier for other people to use this.
All you'd have to do for that is add "This is released under  CC BY-SA 4.0" or something similar
